How to do a Goblet Squat
The goblet squat is a squat performed while holding a kettlebell or dumbbell close to your chest. The front-loaded weight helps you stay upright and sit deeper, which makes it one of the best ways to learn the squat pattern. It trains the quads, glutes and core and works well for beginners and as a warm-up for experienced lifters.

Step by step
- Hold a kettlebell by the horns at chest height, keeping it tucked against your body with your elbows pointing down.
- Stand with your feet about shoulder width apart and your toes turned slightly out.
- Take a breath, brace your core and sit down between your heels by bending your hips and knees together.
- Lower until your elbows come close to the inside of your knees, keeping your chest tall and your heels down.
- Press through your whole foot to stand up straight, squeezing your glutes at the top.
Coaching cues
- Keep the kettlebell glued to your chest; letting it drift forward pulls your torso down.
- Use your elbows to gently nudge your knees out at the bottom.
- Pause for a second at the bottom to build control and comfort with depth.

FAQ
Is the goblet squat good for beginners?
Yes. Holding the weight in front makes it easier to stay upright and reach good depth, so it is one of the best exercises for learning to squat.
Can goblet squats build muscle?
They can, especially for beginners and in higher rep ranges. As you get stronger, the amount of weight you can hold becomes the limit, which is when many people progress to barbell squats.
