How to do a Farmer's Walk
The farmer's walk is a loaded carry where you hold a heavy dumbbell in each hand and walk with upright posture. It builds grip and forearm strength, trains your core to resist leaning, and works the traps and shoulders. It is simple to learn, scales to any level, and has direct carryover to lifting and everyday tasks like carrying groceries.

Step by step
- Place a heavy dumbbell beside each foot and deadlift them up with a flat back and braced core.
- Stand tall with the weights at your sides, shoulders pulled back and down, and your gaze forward.
- Squeeze the handles hard and take a breath into your belly to brace.
- Walk forward with short, controlled steps, keeping the dumbbells still at your sides.
- Breathe steadily behind your brace and hold your torso upright for the full distance or time.
- Stop under control and lower the dumbbells to the floor by hinging at the hips, not rounding your back.
Coaching cues
- Walk heel to toe with short, quick steps rather than long strides.
- Imagine crushing the handles to keep your grip from opening.
- Keep your shoulders down and back; do not let the weights pull you into a slouch.
Common mistakes
Leaning or slouching
Stack your ribs over your hips and keep your chest up even when your grip starts to fade.
Swinging the dumbbells
Shorten your steps and keep your arms locked at your sides.
Going too light
Choose dumbbells heavy enough that your grip is challenged within 30–40 seconds.
Sloppy pickup and set-down
Hinge with a neutral spine to lift and lower the weights, just like a deadlift.

FAQ
What does the farmer's walk work?
It mainly trains grip, forearms, and traps, while your core, glutes, and calves work to keep you upright and stable as you walk.
How heavy should a farmer's walk be?
A common goal is to carry about half your bodyweight in each hand, but start lighter and build up. The load should be heavy enough to challenge your grip while you keep perfect posture.
