How to do a Dumbbell Shrug

The dumbbell shrug is an isolation exercise where you hold dumbbells at your sides and lift your shoulders straight up toward your ears. It targets the upper trapezius and also challenges grip strength. It is simple enough for beginners and useful for anyone wanting fuller traps and stronger shoulders for carries and pulls.

Step by step

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip width apart and a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing your thighs.
  2. Let your arms hang straight and brace your core lightly with your chin level.
  3. Raise your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as they will go.
  4. Hold the top position for one to two seconds while squeezing your traps.
  5. Lower your shoulders slowly until you feel a stretch at the bottom.
  6. Reset your posture and repeat without bouncing between reps.

Coaching cues

  • Think shoulders to ears, straight up and straight down.
  • Keep your arms relaxed like ropes; do not bend the elbows.
  • Use straps if your grip gives out before your traps do.

Common mistakes

Rolling the shoulders

Move straight up and down, since rolling adds no benefit and can irritate the shoulders.

Tiny range of motion

Use a weight you can lift all the way up and lower to a full stretch.

Bending the elbows

Keep your arms straight so the traps, not the biceps, lift the load.

Jutting the head forward

Keep your neck neutral and your gaze straight ahead throughout.

FAQ

Do dumbbell shrugs build bigger traps?

Yes, shrugs directly load the upper traps, and with progressive overload and enough volume they can noticeably increase trap size.

Are dumbbell or barbell shrugs better?

Dumbbells let your arms hang naturally at your sides and allow a freer path, while a barbell is easier to load heavy. Both work, so use whichever feels better and lets you train consistently.
